Some takeaways

For stylists 💇🏾‍♀️
  • Having a mentor can have a HUGE impact on the trajectory of your career Choose someone that nurtures you and doesn't treat you like the competition. Also, don’t be afraid to get into a stylists DMs if you admire them. Ask for their help and support.

  • Sadja is looking for a dedicated stylist in the Poconos! Hit her up on Instagram if you’re interested in learning more.

  • For those just starting out, take your time, go and learn from other people in the industry rather than jumping into being independent or opening up a salon. Remember, working in a salon gives you a chance to learn from others and make mistakes in a safe space.

  • When you’re making the switch to editorial styling, be OK with being an assistant. You might have 5 hours to do something in a salon that needs to be done in 2 hours or less on set. Learning this skillset is a process, be patient and take your time.

  • Customers will not always tell you the truth about their hair - make sure you ask enough questions and run the necessary tests to be able to help them. Having a thorough consultation process helps, but also remind your clients that the quality of your advice is often a reflection of their honesty.

For customers 💛
  • Try and give stylists enough time to plan when you're booking an appointment. Consider when you're messaging them and how long it can take for them to get back to you when they're working a full day.

  • Bear in mind that stylists will have a time-out or divorce process. Try to manage any difficult situations as amicably as you can and give each other grace.

  • Everything from how much water you drink to the food that you eat, how much sleep you get and medical conditions can have an impact on the health of your hair. So, it pays to tell your stylists everything. Withholding information will delay you reaching your hair goals, so be honest and open with stylists always.

Forget ‘miracle’ ingredients, our health has the biggest impact on our hair

Every year, it feels like there’s a hot new ingredient that hair brands across the globe are quick to incorporate within their products.

Now, while these ingredients (e.g. coconut oil, rice water and sea moss to name a few of the most popular miracle ingredients over the years) probably have some positive effect on our hair health and strength, it’s also clear that, when brands do this in their masses, that they are jumping on a trend to make money from a community of people who desperately want to find products that work.

And, it feels like we’ve been tricked.

Tricked into believing that the products we put on our hair and scalp are more important than our overall health and the state of our bodies. We might need moisturising conditioners, but we also need to drink 2 litres of water a day, eat well and get enough sleep. Taking the proper time to look after our bodies is probably the most productive (but also challenging) action we can take to help our hair grow as it should. But it all starts with changing out habits, bit at a time.

So, our question to you is, what habit can you start today that your body and hair will thank you for later?
