Some takeaways

For stylists 💇🏾‍♀️
  • Get licenced, it is the only way to truly learn how to manage all aspects of hair (colouring, chemical treatments, cutting and sanitation). The more equipped you are, the easier it will be to build a dynamic set of services that truly serve customers.

  • Be aggressive with your hair education. The industry is constantly changing, and without the extra time spent on courses to upskill, you may not be able to give your clients what they need.

  • Heat is not the problem, it's how it's applied. When you apply heat to clean hair otherwise you are cooking your hair.

  • Offer customers consultations before they make their way to your chair. That way, you can gather as much context as you possibly can before an appointment and that gives you an opportunity to provide a five star experience.

For customers 💛
  • As ingredients, Sulphates, parabens and silicones have their places in certain products. Despite many people saying you should avoid them at all costs, it really depends on the type of product you're using and how often.

  • Vet your stylists by asking the right questions. There will be stylists who openly state their limitations, others won't. Never assume, and always have a conversation with a stylist before you book.

  • The beauty industry will pray on your insecurities. Get your stylist to educate you and recommend the type of products that you should use

How Stress Affects Hair Growth & Health

Stress is an inevitable part of life, but its impact on our health can be profound, particularly when it comes to hair growth and health. Numerous studies and clinical observations have highlighted how stress can adversely affect the hair growth cycle, leading to several different conditions. The more we understand the reasons behind these conditions and how to mitigate them, the more we can help maintain healthy hair and, most importantly, our overall well-being.

The connection between stress and hair loss is primarily hormonal. When the body is stressed, it releases a hormone called cortisol and elevated cortisol levels can disrupt the functioning of hair follicles. Additionally, stress can impact other hormones, such as adrenaline and noradrenaline, which can further exacerbate hair shedding.

Here are some ways you can manage stress to encourage healthy hair growth:

  1. Testing stress reduction techniques

Practicing stress management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and deep-breathing exercises can help reduce cortisol levels and promote a sense of well-being.

  1. Making healthy lifestyle choices

Maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, getting regular exercise, and ensuring adequate sleep are crucial for mitigating the effects of stress on the body and hair.

3. Medical intervention

For severe cases of stress-induced hair loss, consulting a healthcare professional is essential. They may recommend therapies such as minoxidil for hair growth or cognitive behavioural therapy for managing stress and anxiety.

4. Creating support systems

Seeking support from friends, family, or professional therapists can provide emotional relief and help manage stress more effectively.
