  • Derick closed his salon and moved to New York in a month to go out there for an opportunity, and they gave the job away without telling even a mention. It's

Editorial and television doesn't lead to the big pay day immediately. Derick shared that people would be lucky to get $250 a day.

  • Understanding your rates takes time when you don't know the business or your value. New York has created the 'freelancer isn't free' law is in place to protect independents like stylists get paid in good time.

  • Derick reminded us that there will come a time when your moment has passed and new stylists will come onto the scene. It's as important to be able to step aside instead of strong holding the space. Stepping aside gracefully is something that all stylists should be prepared to do.
